American University students gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor Tyre Nichols on Feb. 15. Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died as a result of a beating by Memphis police officers on Jan. 10.  The vigil was organized by American University Student Government. The vigil was planned to serve as a safe space for students to mourn Nichols and raise awareness for police brutality, according to an Instagram post by AUSG. Speakers asked attendees to contact local officials and stay involved as participants laid candles at the foot of the vigil.
