Anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement protests swept Washington after an ICE agent shot and killed Minneapolis resident Renée Good on Jan. 7. Advocacy groups like Free DC, Code
Pink and The Party for Socialism and Liberation, as well as student advocacy groups, organized protests in Washington throughout the month in response to the nationwide immigration crackdown.
On Jan. 13, Free DC organized a rally in front of the United States Customs and Border Protection headquarters.
Seven days later, on Jan. 20, Code Pink partnered with the PSL to hold the “Stop Ice Terror” rally at the intersection of 14th Street and U Street.
On Jan. 30., students from Howard University led a walkout as part of a national shutdown. After meeting at Sankofa Video Books & Cafe, the group marched to the Gallery Place Metro station. They merged with another group of protesters at the entrance to the station and then marched to the White House.
Throughout January, protesters braved the cold for hours on end. On Jan. 30, temperatures hovered around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, dipping into the teens as afternoon turned to evening. Protesters were undeterred, wearing layers upon layers of clothing.
