Dear Reader,
Thank you for picking up the 37th issue of AWOL’s magazine.
We appreciate those who take the time to engage with the content we work tirelessly on each semester.
AWOL is now in its 17th year of production. We investigate the world through a critical, subversive and irrepressible lens so you, the reader, might be better equipped to view the world and find your way in it. Unity in the face of fear and restricting resources is the theme of this issue. Our cover story, written by Mia Kimm and Ali Filali, explores students’ experiences getting appointments with the Center for Wellbeing, including navigating the waitlists for initial consultations and scheduling later appointments. Kate Kessler and Lucas Powers covered how a tightened budget impacted the Applied Music Program’s lessons. Andrew Kummeth examined the Advisory Neighborhood Commission responses to President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard.
Our multimedia team produced a documentary on the significance and potential implications of the R1 designation on AU’s science and research community. The Hum team asked students and professors whether they thought fashion was political.
When AWOL was founded in 2008, we were called a “dirty little zine” and thrown out by university employees across campus. Since then, AWOL has grown to include five departments while maintaining our mission of providing investigative and long-form news to the community. A special thanks to everyone who came before to build AWOL, and to those who continue to foster its growth. You will never truly leave American Way of Life behind.
Finally, I want to thank the AWOL staff for their hard work and our E-board for their constant dedication. A special thanks to my co-Editor-in-Chief, Caleb Ogilvie, for his commitment and friendship that made this magazine possible. I’d also like to thank you, the reader, for picking up this magazine and engaging with our work. I hope this issue makes you angry for all the right reasons.
Sincerely,
Kalie Walker
