Myth Busting: False Rape Reports

Myth Busting: False Rape Reports

Mahri Irvine April 5, 2010

Last week, Alex Knepper’s column generated a buzz on campus and around the country.

Blog Roundout: Why is the Eagle so Hostile to Feminists?

Jack Strauss March 30, 2010
Junior Ashley Joyce has added her voice to the exploding debate on Alex Knepper's misogynistic diatribe in AU's student paper, The Eagle.  Knepper's editorial has received a lot of attention (see below for links) and created a vocal and active backlash on campus from women's rights advocates.  For more on that, check out the Campus Campaign for Consent. Keep your eyes peeled for the Spring '10 issue of AWOL with a print version of Ashley's article.  You can also read it online here.

Why is the Eagle So Hostile to Feminists?

Ashley Joyce March 30, 2010

Like many college campuses, AU hosts a predominately female student body.

Did Obama Even Want the Public Option?

Chris Lewis December 25, 2009
Health care reform is pretty much in the bag. President Barack Obama was triumphant in at least getting a bill passed, and folks on the left seem to have come to some consensus that hey, at least it's better than nothing. But over at The Progressive, Matthew Rothschild is having none of it. "Seems to me that Obama played us all for fools," he writes.

AWOL Newswire: “The Class War Is Over”

Steve Spires December 20, 2009

In mainstream politics, there has always been an aversion to speaking in terms of “class.” Any discussion of class is slandered as too leftist, too smacking of Marxism to be taken seriously by Democrats and Republicans.

Copenhagen, the New Berlin

Chris Lewis December 20, 2009
Guardian environmentalist extraordinaire George Monbiot on the Copenhagen climate negotiations:
Watching this stupid summit via webcam (I wasn't allowed in either), it struck me that the treaty-making system has scarcely changed in 130 years.

Academic Talk: An Expanded Marxist Approach

AWOL December 10, 2009
Academic Talk is an AWOL blog feature that steps out of the newsroom and into the classroom -- highlighting theory's relevance and manifestation in the country's conversations. In the latest New Left Review, London-based academic journal, Erik Olin Wright expands the scope of his Marxist critique -- which has been an important citation for over three decades -- and details why his analysis has particular importance in the present American idiom. Wright's work has principally exercised in the classical Marxist tradition, distilling class issues with mind to structured mechanisms of exploitation and domination.

AWOL Newswire: You’re a Secret Muslim, Charlie Brown

Peter Harrison December 6, 2009
In the past week, two news stories arose that, despite their comedic value, served only to shave still more dignity from this country's dignity-deficient conservative voice; The Obama Muslim-smearing that reared its ugly head before the election is still a right-wing trope -- along with the right's familiar tabloid circus fare. First, in an interview with Oregon-based, nationally-syndicated conservative radio host Rusty Humphries, Sarah Palin stated that if she makes a run at the presidency in 2012, President Obama's birth certificate would once again become an issue. "I think it's a fair question, just like I think past association and past voting records -- all of that is fair game," Palin said.
