Remembering American Airlines Flight 5342

Vibrant memorials honoring the victims of the Jan. 29 plane crash over the Potomac River have been established in downtown Washington.

After an American Airlines passenger plane collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter while attempting to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, both aircraft fell into the icy waters of the river, killing all 67 people aboard.

One tribute displayed along a construction fence on the National Mall includes photos of several people who died in the crash with various bouquets placed as offerings. Posters tied to the fence highlight a poem honoring the lives lost. Another memorial rests along the river’s edge near the location where the aircraft fell into the water. Belongings such as ice skates and snacks have been left to recognize the victims.
