AWOL

Benjamin S. Weiss

I’m a Junior in SIS, and my areas of interest are: anything that’s worth writing about.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but was really drawn to journalism via the take-no-prisoners style of early VICE documentaries. I joined AWOL in my first year at AU after seeing an old ad on the Wonk bus and have been contributing ever since. I think that the press has a unique ability to elicit positive social change and that AWOL has a duty to keep the student community informed on issues that don’t necessarily make the front page.

I take a lot of inspiration from the motto of the Aspen Daily News: “If you don’t want it printed, don’t let it happen.”

Fun fact: before I was a broke college student I used to wrench cars — I was a mechanical intern on a rally racing team and Googled my way through an engine swap procedure. Now I keep my skills fresh through a diet of Forza Motorsport and car maintenance YouTube videos, until I have the money to start racing again.
